WHAT IS ROSACEA?

Rosacea is a common rash, usually found on the centre of the face, chin, cheeks, nose and forehead, usually affecting people in their middle age.  People with rosacea tend to flush easily and have a persistent redness with small inflamed red bumps and spots.

Symptoms often begin with flushing, where the skin turns red, but other symptoms can develop as the condition progresses, such as, burning and stinging sensations, permanent redness,  spots, small blood vessels in the skin becoming visible. Rosacea is a relapsing condition, which means there are periods when symptoms are particularly worse than others.

How can light therapies treat it?
Low-Level Light Therapy LED

LED Low Level Light Therapy is beneficial in the treatment of rosacea. The concentrated red light is absorbed by the mitochondria in the cells and stimulates the generation of more collagen. It can help with a variety of skin conditions including redness, rosacea, eczema and psoriasis plus has excellent anti-ageing effects.  The heat and light boost circulation, bringing more blood and nutrients to the area.

HEALITE II (as featured in the March 2017 issue of Glamour Magazine) is a LED low-level light therapy device that works on rosacea in particular by normalising and strengthening the capillaries. This is a low-cost treatment that will require a number of sessions and continuous maintenance sessions but the results worth it. Low-level light therapy is a low-risk, low-cost treatment, specialist LED Light Therapy clinic’s such as the Light Salon Skin Rejuvenation Bar provides this short, yet relaxing treatment.

High-Level Light Therapy –
Nd: YAG-based Laser

Laser treatment using the Spectra XT. The long pulse Nd:YAG laser has enabled the application of this wavelength to be extended to treat rosacea telangiectasia. The Nd:YAG wavelength combines a deep penetration with a pulsing light that matches the natural relaxation time of vessels between pulses. This special wavelength of high-level light therapy normalises and strengthens the capillaries, whilst a cooling jet of air is applied to offset the heating sensation produced by the laser to ensure maximum comfort.

Most rosacea sufferers should plan on receiving a course of laser treatments in a short period of time.  This allows the laser to treat vessels that are on the verge of clearing up and also allows the laser to treat deeper each time as the vessels clears.   Laser is a more expensive treatment, providing quicker results but with slightly more risk. Laser is one of the best treatments for rosacea, targeting the root cause of the disorder and not just the symptoms. Clinics such as Premier Laser London offer this specialist treatment.

“Treating Rosacea is all about maintenance, Healite II LED light therapy is an excellent long-term maintenance solution, with not as much heat interaction and less risk”,  says Lee-Ann Palmer Head of Training & Education at Venn Healthcare, “both modalities can be used to complement each other and increase efficacy”
"We have both the Healite II and Spectra XT at our Harley Street Clinic, both are excellent treatments for both acne and rosacea, so I tend to recommend a combination of the two" Genevieve Knodell Skin Specialist at LifePlus Clinics Harley Street
