Marathon Runner, Achilles Tendonopathy

Shockwave Success Story Marathon Runner.jpg

William Hewton, Age 61

Condition: Achilles Tendinitis

Treated at: How Clinic, Edinburgh

Device: Storz MP200 RSW with V-Actor Vibration Therapy

What is / was your condition?

Left Achilles Tendonopathy. A scan showed that the Tendon was severely inflamed/torn. Undamaged tendon 3mm, damaged portion was swollen to 12mm. Large lump was evident, and all medical professionals thought that even if the pain was cured allowing me to run again, the lump would probably remain.

How long have you had / did you have symptoms?

I have been running for 35 years and this was my third serious Achilles injury on the left side. It may never have healed up properly from previous injuries as it was niggling and tender over a 25 year period. The most recent bout lasted about 12 months in total, with around 6 months of unsuccessful treatment, before going through a course of Shockwave Therapy. After the course of Shockwave the pain had gone which allowed me to walk (up to 10 miles) and cycle regularly, but I avoided running while continuing with Shockwave therapy to make sure that it was properly healed.

How did it impact your life / sport / physical activity?

At the outset I was unable to run, difficulty even with walking and cycling was also impacted.

What other treatments did you try prior to Shockwave Therapy?

Manipulative physiotherapy and ultrasound.

How did you hear about Shockwave Therapy treatment?

From my Physiotherapist who referred me to Helen How for Shockwave.

How was it during the Shockwave treatment & Vibration Therapy with the V Actor?

Mild to severe discomfort, but no more than standard manipulative physiotherapy.

How was it immediately after treatment?

Usually some immediate pain relief and slow steady improvement after each session.

How long since your last session of Shockwave Therapy / V Actor Vibration Therapy?

Three weeks.

How is the condition now and how has it improved your life / sport / physical activity?

Completely healed, allowing me to run again. Even the lump disappeared, and now there is no sign of it with no tenderness. I have now been running again for almost 2 years with no problems. I usually have some vibration therapy every 6 weeks or so on both legs, just to maintain flexibility.

"William recently had a scan which showed the old calcification had been dissolved" Helen How, How Clinic.

Would you recommend Shockwave Therapy to others with this condition or similar conditions?

Yes, from someone like Helen who knows how to get the best out of Shockwave Therapy.
